Moderate snowfall is likely in some high hilly and Himalayan areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki Provinces today, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. The department has also warned of heavy snowfall in one or two places of the high mountain regions of Koshi and Bagmati Provinces.
The department further stated that water levels in major rivers such as the Bagmati, Kamala, Koshi, and Kankai, along with their tributaries, are expected to rise significantly during this period. The water level may reach the alert stage in some areas, and sudden surges are likely in small rivers flowing through the Mahabharat and Chure regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Madhesh Provinces.
There is a high risk of sudden flooding in small rivers flowing through districts including:
- Bagmati Province: Kathmandu Valley, Kavrepalanchok, Sindhupalchok, Dolakha, Makwanpur, Chitwan, Sindhuli
- Madhesh Province: Bara, Parsa, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Mahottari, Dhanusha, Saptari
- Koshi Province: Sankhuwasabha, Taplejung, Panchthar, Tehrathum, Bhojpur, Dhankuta, Ilam, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari
Due to the expected rainfall and snowfall, there may be risks of sudden floods, landslides, and disruptions to daily life. Road and air transportation, agriculture, and tourism sectors may also be affected.
The department added that Cyclone “Montha”, developed over the Bay of Bengal, is currently moving toward Andhra Pradesh, India. After making landfall, the cyclone is expected to gradually weaken and move north-northwest, reaching near central Nepal as a low-pressure system before shifting eastward.
