Angry over the vandalism of a mosque in Dhankawal, Dhanusha, members of the Muslim community staged a protest in Birgunj, Parsa, on Sunday.
During the demonstration, tensions rose as clashes broke out between protesters and the police. The protest, which started from Birgunj Ward No. 2, saw police firing around five rounds of tear gas to control the crowd as protesters attempted to march toward the market area while chanting slogans against the Dhanusha incident.
During the confrontation near the Chhapkaiya Community Police Unit, protesters threw stones, causing damage to the windows and signage of the police post. Protesters also blocked key roads in Birgunj, including Chhapkaiya, Idgah Chowk, Ghantaghar, and Mudli, by burning tires.
Two police officers were injured, while two others sustained minor injuries from stones during the scuffle. One protester was briefly detained but later released as the situation was brought under control.
Parsa District Police spokesperson Raju Karki stated that the situation in Birgunj is now under control. “The crowd has been dispersed, and the security has been strengthened in sensitive areas,” Karki said, adding that police patrols have been increased to prevent any untoward incidents.
