Resham Chaudhary, chairperson of the Nagarik Unmukti Party, Nepal, has filed a petition at the Supreme Court challenging the decision to cancel his election candidacy.
Chaudhary had submitted his nomination for the House of Representatives election from Kailali–1. However, the Election Officer’s Office in Kailali–1 rejected his candidacy, stating that it did not meet the standards set by prevailing election laws and guidelines.
According to the election office, although Chaudhary was released from prison after receiving a presidential pardon for a life sentence, records of his conviction and imprisonment still remain, making him ineligible under election regulations.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hold a preliminary hearing on Chaudhary’s petition this coming Sunday.
