Nepali Congress central member and head of the party’s Education Department, Nain Singh Maher, has held a meeting with Nobel Prize–winning Japanese professor Takaaki Kajita, who is the chief guest of Tribhuvan University’s 49th convocation ceremony.
The meeting took place on Thursday at the Soaltee Hotel in Kathmandu, where in-depth discussions were held on the current state of higher education in Nepal, research in science and technology, improvement of academic quality, and the need for education policies aligned with contemporary demands, according to Maher’s secretariat.
During the meeting, Maher expressed confidence that the presence of a world-renowned scientist like Professor Kajita would inspire and energize students of Tribhuvan University. He stated that Kajita’s suggestions would serve as important guidance in enhancing the academic quality of Nepal’s oldest university and in making education more research-oriented. Maher also noted that Nepal could learn significantly from Japan’s remarkable progress in science and technology.
Professor Kajita, in response, expressed his commitment to providing necessary support and cooperation from both his personal capacity and from Japan for the advancement of Nepal’s academic and scientific sectors.
Professor Kajita is in Kathmandu to attend Tribhuvan University’s convocation ceremony. A faculty member at the University of Tokyo, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2015 for the discovery of neutrino oscillation.
Maher, who is considered a strong contender for the post of General Secretary in the upcoming 15th General Convention of the Nepali Congress, has recently intensified interactions with intellectual and academic figures. As Education Department head, he has been actively engaging in discussions related to educational reform and policy development in Nepal.
