The ruling Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML have decided not to move forward immediately with an impeachment motion against Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar.
Amid reports that both parties were collecting signatures for impeachment, UML Chief Whip Mahesh Bartuala clarified that the ruling alliance has not reached such a conclusion.
“There is no signature campaign underway. Some issues related to the Deputy Speaker have been raised in Parliament, and the Rastriya Swatantra Party is boycotting sessions. The matter of her recommending an unrelated individual for a U.S. visit still remains unresolved in Parliament,” Bartuala said.
He stressed that news of ruling parties preparing an impeachment motion was not true. “The key issue is whether her actions were appropriate for her position. Parliament must seek answers and draw conclusions. As of today, we have no plan to register any proposal against her,” he added.
Bartuala also noted that discussions regarding the Deputy Speaker would likely surface again in Parliament, but confirmed that the ruling parties have not prepared any impeachment plan at this stage.
