Nepal Communist Party (NCP) leader and former minister Shakti Basnet has described the upcoming House of Representatives election in Falgun as a form of “referendum.”
Addressing the NCP’s Unity Message Assembly at Tribhuvan Chowk in Nepalgunj, Basnet said that since the people can clearly choose their political direction through the election itself, there is no need for a separate referendum.
His remarks come at a time when pro-monarchy groups have been demanding a referendum on reinstating a Hindu state and the monarchy.
Basnet criticized the trend of “rejecting the old and demanding only the new” in the name of political stability and reform, calling it misguided. According to him, problems are not solved by blaming individuals but by presenting clarity and competence in policies, programs, and ideology.
“Competence cannot be judged by portraying others as guilty,” he said. “Without a clear vision for reform, the rush for ‘something new’ pushes the country toward problems rather than solutions.”
He claimed that social justice and good governance are the real aspirations of the people and said the NCP is committed to protecting and fulfilling those aspirations.
Basnet further remarked that the upcoming election will be a decisive turning point in balancing state mechanisms and political practices according to public needs. Since elections serve as the direct expression of the people’s will, he stressed that respecting the electoral process is essential for strengthening democracy.
