The Nepal Teachers’ Federation has decided to begin an agitation starting from the second week of Bhadra (late August), citing the government’s failure to move forward with the education bill as per prior agreements.
Speaking after the Federation’s meeting held on Thursday in Kathmandu, Federation President Laxmikishor Subedi stated that the protest programs will be outlined by a mobilization committee and approved by the national committee.
Before the agitation begins, a full in-person meeting of the national committee has been scheduled for Bhadra 3 and 4 (August 19 and 20), Subedi informed. He also noted that he is unaware of the developments regarding the bill in the Education Committee, adding that an evaluation of the issues addressed by the bill will only be possible after it is officially registered in the House of Representatives.
The meeting also reviewed the current situation following the previous agreement with the government. According to Subedi, the Federation believes that the draft bill does not appear to address the problems of school education or satisfy the concerns of teachers and staff comprehensively.
