The Nepali Congress central committee is set to meet today at 1 p.m. at the party’s central office in Sanepa, according to General Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel.
Earlier, a meeting scheduled for Friday was postponed after the acting president and the joint general secretaries could not reach an agreement on presenting the Mahadiveshan (general convention) schedule.
General Secretary Gagan Thapa had warned that he would not participate in the meeting if the schedule was not allowed to be presented, prompting Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka to postpone the session.
Although a party officials’ meeting was held on Saturday to discuss the issue, no consensus was reached. Leaders have stated that today’s meeting will be preceded by a party performance committee meeting.
The dispute centers on whether to hold a regular or special Mahadiveshan and the timing of it. The establishment faction is reluctant to hold the convention immediately, while the two general secretaries and the Shekhar Koirala faction are advocating for an immediate Mahadiveshan. The current working committee’s term lasts until Mangsir, with provisions in the party statute allowing for a one-year extension.
Additionally, 54 percent of convention delegates submitted a petition on Aswin 29 at the party’s central office in Sanepa requesting a special Mahadiveshan, adding pressure on the central committee to convene today.
