Nepali Congress General Secretary Bishwaprakash Sharma has announced that he will not contest the upcoming election under either the direct or proportional representation system.
Speaking at the party’s Central Working Committee meeting held on Sunday, Sharma said he has decided not to be a candidate in any category. He explained that becoming a proportional representation candidate would deprive other party colleagues of opportunities and prospects.
Sharma stated, “Declaring that I will not contest a direct election does not mean I intend to enter Parliament through the proportional system. For a party general secretary to take a proportional seat means taking away another colleague’s opportunity, and I do not want to do that. It is necessary to transform the Nepali Congress and establish it in a new way in the coming days, and I want to dedicate myself fully to that mission.”
He further added that he prefers to stay out of Parliament and devote all his time and energy to strengthening and reforming the party.
