Nepali Congress General Secretary Pradip Paudel has said that the party’s Central Working Committee meeting will take several concrete and historic decisions focused on the upcoming elections.
Speaking to journalists at the party office in Sanepa, Paudel claimed that the decisions to be made at Friday’s meeting would create a new political wave across the country.
According to him, the meeting is preparing to take a historic step by formally announcing the party’s candidate for prime minister. He said the Nepali Congress is preparing to contest the elections by naming party president Gagan Kumar Thapa as its prime ministerial candidate, and the proposal will be presented to the Central Working Committee for an official decision.
Paudel described this move as the beginning of a new chapter in democratic practice. He said the party aims to formally provide citizens with the opportunity to know and choose who will become the country’s prime minister through the electoral process.
He explained that the objective of this practice is to establish a system in which candidates seek votes in parliamentary elections with a clear basis of who will lead the government. According to Paudel, voters will know in advance who will become prime minister if a particular candidate or party wins.
“Today’s meeting will take some concrete and historic election-focused decisions,” Paudel said. “The Central Working Committee’s decision will create a new wave across the country. Today’s decision will be important in attracting votes toward the Nepali Congress. This is the first time in the party’s history that such a formal, election-oriented decision is being taken.”
He added that during the special general convention, the Nepali Congress had committed to changing both its leadership and policies, and that commitment has now been implemented. Paudel said the party is now moving forward with new proposals aimed at changing the country’s leadership as well. He stated that the decision to propose a prime ministerial candidate will be taken through the meeting ahead of the February 21 elections.
Paudel also said the party’s goal is to develop a system in which citizens can play a direct role in the prime minister selection process. Through this new practice, voters will not only elect members of the House of Representatives but will also be able to determine who becomes prime minister through their vote.
He further informed that the meeting would take other important decisions to attract voters toward the Nepali Congress in the upcoming elections. With changes already made in leadership and policy through the special general convention, Paudel said the party is now advancing with new proposals to change the country’s leadership, adding that Gagan Thapa has been made a candidate from Madhes to represent the sentiments of all Nepalis.
