Nepali Congress politics has been thrown into turmoil after General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma questioned the leadership’s sluggishness and announced the date for a “Special General Convention.”
Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba has come under pressure after the two general secretaries unilaterally fixed the date and venue of the convention. Soon after their announcement, President Deuba called a meeting of the Central Executive Committee for today (Friday) at 3:00 PM. According to Party Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel, the meeting will be held at the party’s central office in Sanepa.
Citing the party’s inability to hold the regular 15th General Convention, Thapa and Sharma announced that a Special General Convention will be held on Poush 27 and 28 at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu. They have also stated that the hall at Bhrikutimandap has already been booked for the event.
Earlier, the Central Committee had set a schedule to hold the 15th General Convention starting from Poush 26. However, as ward- and municipality-level conventions could not be completed, the regular general convention became uncertain. To break this deadlock, the general secretaries moved forward with the idea of a Special General Convention, prompting President Deuba to consult senior leaders and convene the Central Executive Committee meeting.
