The Nepali Congress has said that Prime Minister Sushila Karki should immediately hold dialogue with top leaders of major political parties to ensure that elections are conducted on the scheduled date.
Speaking at an all-party meeting on elections convened by Prime Minister Karki at Singha Durbar on Monday, Nepali Congress Co-General Secretary Mahendra Yadav emphasized the need for political dialogue. He said elections cannot be held by fostering hostility toward political parties and their leaders, and urged the Prime Minister not to delay consultations with top leaders to create a conducive environment for elections. He also advised the government to ensure an adequate security environment for the electoral process.
Yadav said that many elections in the past were held under the leadership of the Nepali Congress and were conducted in a fair manner, adding that the current government should also work accordingly to ensure impartial elections. He expressed objection to the government’s focus on matters other than elections, stating that failure to conduct elections on the scheduled date would raise serious questions about the legitimacy of the government itself.
He said, “If security arrangements are not ensured, elections cannot be conducted. Many elections in the past were held under the leadership of the Nepali Congress. Even our Prime Minister lost elections under Congress leadership, but we still conducted fair elections. The same should be expected from this government. The government should not engage in vendetta politics. Political parties are the foundation of democracy, so dialogue with top party leaders is essential. And regarding the laws you are trying to introduce, even if they are good, time is not on our side.”
Co-General Secretary Yadav also said that in a democracy, no activity can move forward by ignoring political parties.
