Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplav’, General Secretary of the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist), has called for the banning of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. Addressing the party’s central committee meeting that began on Thursday, Biplav emphasized the need to demonetize these denominations and suggested introducing Rs 200 and Rs 400 notes in circulation. He also mentioned the possibility of a Rs 2,000 note.
“If we want to convert black money into white and circulate it in a way accepted by the public, we must demonetize Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes,” Biplav said. “We can also introduce new Rs 200 and Rs 400 notes.”
Biplav stressed the formation of a high-level investigation commission to control corruption. He proposed that such a commission should conduct thorough inquiries and ensure decisions are executed through a high-level court without leaving room for appeals to the Supreme Court.
“Our four main proposals are: a government of all parties, the establishment of a high-level anti-corruption commission, the formation of a high-level judiciary, and the execution of final decisions without Supreme Court appeals,” he said.
He added that corrupt individuals’ assets should be nationalized, and they should face maximum punishments, including life imprisonment, based on impartial investigations.
Warning that his party would launch movements if their demands were not met, Biplav stated that such protests would be peaceful. He also criticized the current government’s inability to conduct elections, claiming that forming an all-party government is essential under the current circumstances.
Finally, Biplav highlighted the need for unity among communist parties in Nepal and mentioned that some agendas could align with other parties, including the UML, as part of an all-party government framework.
