Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has emphasized that all social media platforms operating in Nepal must adhere to the country’s legal framework. Speaking at the inaugural session of the “Digital Nepal Conclave 2025” organized by the ICT Foundation, PM Oli stated that social media platforms must be registered according to Nepalese law, pay taxes, and fulfill other legal obligations. He added that the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology has already been instructed to ensure that social media operates within the law.
“All business related to information technology in Nepal must be known to the government. All social media platforms operating in Nepal must fulfill their legal obligations and pay taxes,” said PM Oli. Highlighting the government’s role in developing the IT sector, he added, “The government exists for the people. We focus on the development and promotion of information technology that citizens want. Investments, both domestic and foreign, can generate revenue in this sector. Move forward confidently; the government is with you.”
PM Oli also recalled that during his journey through the mid-hills of Pushpalal, he was pleased to learn that elderly women in remote villages of Rukum were using Facebook, reflecting the rapid reach of information technology.
He emphasized that Nepal is well-suited for digital technologies and green energy, and that artificial intelligence should be leveraged for development and prosperity.
According to PM Oli, over 150,000 students benefited from online education initiatives for SEE students launched last year, which also improved their results. He urged that mobile technology should be used wisely to protect children while promoting education and development.
The Prime Minister noted that the government recently approved an AI policy and is focused on transforming and advancing information technology. He also criticized those who, ignoring these developments, deliberately spread pessimism.
He reaffirmed that the government’s current focus on stability, good governance, and the use of IT will encourage the private sector. PM Oli stressed that information technology is essential for maintaining good governance and that its proper use can help improve human behavior and reduce corruption to zero.
