Prime Minister Sushila Karki has stated that the House of Representatives election scheduled for Fagun 21 (March 4) is the only lawful and constitutional solution to prevent the country from sliding into uncertainty. Addressing an all-party meeting held today at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, she urged all political parties to participate in the election responsibly and on time.
PM Karki said the current government was formed on the foundation of the legitimate outrage of the youth and their movement against decades of political disorder and misgovernance. “The youth delivered a clear message: ‘Enough! Corruption, misgovernance, and politics of access will no longer be tolerated,’” she said.
She explained that based on this historic mandate, the President dissolved the House of Representatives and announced the election for Fagun 21 to address the national crisis and provide a political way forward. PM Karki said the country stands at a decisive juncture and described the all-party gathering as a vital platform for demonstrating collective political determination to secure the future of democracy.
Stating that the government is constitutionally obligated to conduct the election on Fagun 21, she clarified that there is no confusion regarding the government’s constitutional position or commitment.
She stressed that political forces that believe in democracy cannot avoid elections, noting that no party should evade its constitutional responsibility by demanding the reinstatement of Parliament instead of respecting the people’s mandate.
PM Karki also highlighted the need for disciplined political conduct during the election period. She expressed concern over the use of hateful and inflammatory language by some leaders, saying such speech pollutes the political and social environment. She added that the government will fully support the Election Commission to take immediate and public action against hate speech and severe violations of the code of conduct.
She emphasized the importance of dignity in political expression, noting that discipline and moral conduct are essential components of democratic politics. PM Karki affirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the Election Commission, saying that empowering the commission is crucial for conducting a free and fair election. She added that the Commission has already accelerated its preparations and action plan for the upcoming polls.
