Nepal Communist Party (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has urged all patriotic citizens to unite in defense of the nation’s sovereignty and independence, warning that the country is facing a serious crisis.
Addressing a virtual meeting of the Janapragatishil Manch Asia Regional Committee on the occasion of Constitution Day, Prachanda claimed that strategic attempts are being made to weaken Nepal. He stressed that national unity is essential to confront the grave challenges ahead.
Highlighting the role of the decade-long People’s War in drafting Nepal’s constitution, he said, “The dream of writing a constitution through an elected Constituent Assembly, pending for 70 years, would not have been possible without the sacrifices of thousands during the People’s War.” Prachanda reiterated the Maoist Centre’s longstanding demands for a directly elected executive and proportional representation, saying these ideas are becoming increasingly relevant today.
Commenting on the recent Jenji movement, Prachanda criticized the government’s use of force and reminded that his party had consistently urged restraint. He said the Maoist Centre played a key role in addressing the movement’s demands while safeguarding the constitution.
“We have proposed a political solution that honors the sacrifices of the Jenji protesters, protects the constitution, and upholds the dignity of the presidency,” he stated, adding that an interim government and timely elections are necessary to lead the country out of the current political deadlock.
“Nepal has never faced such a grave challenge. The question now is whether we can protect the nation our ancestors fought to preserve,” Prachanda said, calling for all patriotic forces to stand united.
The virtual meeting was attended by Maoist Centre leaders and representatives of the Janapragatishil Manch.
