All preparations have been completed for the annual mela held at Gokarneshwar Mahadev Temple in the northeastern part of the capital on Bhadra Krishna Aunsi. Observed as the day to honor fathers, those whose fathers have passed visit Gokarneshwar to perform traditional Vedic rituals such as tarpana, pindadan, and shraddha in their fathers’ names.
The temple management committee reported that, as millions of devotees are expected to arrive on Saturday to pay homage to their ancestors, preparations for the mela started on Thursday. Jayaram Mahat, the committee chairperson and Ward Chair of Gokarneshwar Municipality—4, confirmed that arrangements for the day have been completed. Over 200 volunteers have been deployed to manage the crowd and facilitate smooth conduct of the rituals.
Seven subcommittees have been formed to manage various aspects of the mela, including traffic, finance, volunteer coordination, health, security, religious rituals, and overall coordination. Public transport will be restricted near Nepal Medical College and Makalbari Sano Pul areas to ensure smooth access to the temple premises, the committee stated.
Devotees have already begun arriving at the temple from early Friday morning, securing spaces for rituals and ceremonies. The day is locally known as Gokarne Aunsi, as devotees gather to honor their fathers, performing tarpana, pindadan, and sidadaan for the departed, drawing large crowds to the temple grounds.
