Prime Minister Sushila Karki has extended her best wishes on the occasion of Sonam Lhosar. In her message, she said, “On the auspicious occasion of Sonam Lhosar–2862, the Year of the Horse (Ta Lho), the national cultural festival of the Tamang community as well as Himalayan and hill indigenous nationalities, I extend my heartfelt greetings to all.”
Sonam Lhosar is celebrated every year on the first day of the bright fortnight of the month of Magh as the New Year of the Tamang community. On this occasion, the community observes clan worship, nature worship, and recalls the teachings of Buddha, while families and relatives gather to celebrate and share happiness.
Along with the Tamang community of Nepal, indigenous groups including Hyolmo, Thakali, Jirel, Nesyangba, Bhote, Dura, and Lepcha celebrate the festival with great enthusiasm. The traditional dances, songs, musical instruments, and customary foods showcased during Sonam Lhosar are also regarded as valuable cultural heritage.
