Prime Minister Sushila Karki held talks with Durga Prasai, coordinator of the Citizen Protection Campaign, on Thursday.
The meeting took place at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar, and was attended by Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal and Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Prasai described the talks as positive, stating that the government had shown commitment to addressing demands that are feasible. He also said that both the government and his group have agreed to finalize an agreement by Sunday. According to Prasai, the government has asked for time until Sunday to reach a conclusion.
“I presented my concerns seriously. They have asked for time until Sunday. If there is no agreement by then, we will go for a movement,” Prasai said, questioning the government’s actions, including the detention of around 1,100 Gen Z youths, and asking what the government is trying to achieve.
Prasai further stated that their final mandate includes demands such as stopping the auction of houses and land, ending the risk of people becoming landless, and providing people with an opportunity to repay dues. He added that it is not possible to move forward by appeasing one side while causing suffering to another.
“Our final mandate is not big. Our demands are not excessive,” he said. “We have asked the government not to auction homes and land, not to make people landless, and to give them a chance to repay. We have also demanded action against those responsible for the incidents of Bhadra 23 and 24, those who attempted a ‘coup’, and those involved in corruption. If the government says it cannot act on these issues, then there is no point in having any hope.”
