Prime Minister Sushila Karki has honored renowned social worker Anjali Maske. She invited Maske to her official residence in Baluwatar and offered her a traditional pachhyaura (shawl) as a token of respect. The two also held a brief conversation during the meeting.
“I had heard that you have been contributing to society selflessly for a long time. I always wished to meet you once, and today that wish has come true. Although the government may not be able to do much, we organized this program to meet and honor you,” said Prime Minister Karki. “We feel honored to be able to respect you. Your selfless service is a source of inspiration for many in society.”
Maske, a resident of Tahachal, Kathmandu, has been known for the last 27 years for applying tika to men who do not have sisters or are unable to meet them during the Bhai Tika festival so their foreheads are not left empty on the special day.
She has also contributed to society by providing free food for abandoned and underprivileged patients and their caretakers at Bir Hospital. Similarly, she has been managing mass Bratabandha (sacred thread ceremonies) at Kasthamandap. According to the Prime Minister’s Press Coordinator Ram Bahadur Rawal, Maske informed the Prime Minister that she has been funding all her social work from her personal expenses.
“I do not do these works with any expectations from anyone,” said the 82-year-old Maske. “I do whatever I can with my own resources. Now that my son earns, it has become easier to do what I had planned to do.” She added that she has no expectations from the government.
“I do not want anything. We should all contribute to society in our own ways. We should support one another and work with a spirit of service. We should not expect from the government; rather we should support it. Only then can the nation prosper,” she said.
Maske also said that she felt happy and hopeful the day she heard that Sushila Karki had become the first woman Prime Minister of the country.
“You became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and did courageous work there,” Maske said. “I had always thought it would be good if such a person became Prime Minister. Today, I got to see that day. I feel very happy and hopeful. Please continue to work fearlessly as before.”
Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Karki, Maske said that the Prime Minister had taken responsibility in a challenging time for the country.
The program was attended by Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel, Minister for Health and Population Dr. Sudha Gautam, Chief Advisor to the Prime Minister Ajay Bhadra Khanal, and Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister Adarsha Kumar Shrestha. (RSS)
