Prime Minister Sushila Karki has pledged to initiate the process of incorporating the Nepal Sambat calendar on Nepali currency notes.
Addressing a program held in Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur, on Wednesday on the occasion of Nepal Sambat 1146, Prime Minister Karki said that the process would move forward in consultation with the concerned authorities.
“I express my commitment to proceed with the process of including Nepal Sambat on banknotes issued by Nepal Rastra Bank after holding consultations with the relevant stakeholders,” she said.
Nepal Sambat was introduced 1,146 years ago during the reign of King Raghavdev when Shankhadhar Sakhwa freed citizens suffering under poverty and debt by paying off their loans.
Shankhadhar Sakhwa was declared a national luminary in 1999 A.D. (2056 B.S.), and Nepal Sambat was declared a national era on Kartik 7, 2065 B.S.
Highlighting the historical importance of Sakhwa’s contribution, Prime Minister Karki said that his noble act of freeing people from the burden of debt stands as an inspiration for all to walk the path of social unity, sacrifice, and humanity.
