Several GenZ youths protested outside Sheetal Niwas after being denied entry to a discussion organized by President Ramchandra Paudel today. The protesters, who gathered in front of the presidential residence, chanted slogans demanding to be allowed inside.
According to reports, only the team led by Sudan Gurung was permitted to enter the meeting, while others — including members of the official GenZ dialogue team — were left outside, prompting the demonstrations.
A large number of youths have assembled outside the residence, insisting that they also be included in the talks. Police are currently trying to calm the crowd.
President Paudel is holding the meeting with GenZ representatives in the presence of Prime Minister Sushila Karki and several ministers. The discussion is still underway.
Initially, 17 GenZ representatives were scheduled to attend the meeting, but the number reportedly increased to over 20, according to a youth leader.
The GenZ movement, which erupted across the Kathmandu Valley and nationwide on Bhadra 23 and 24, had demanded anti-corruption reforms and good governance. The protests eventually led to the collapse of the KP Sharma Oli-led government.
Following the movement, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was appointed Prime Minister of the interim government on the recommendation of GenZ leaders. She has been tasked with holding national elections on Falgun 21 and is currently working to expand the Council of Ministers by including GenZ representatives.
Today’s discussion at Sheetal Niwas was organized to consult GenZ representatives regarding cabinet expansion and the upcoming elections, though officials have yet to determine which group represents the official GenZ leadership.
