Chairperson of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Rabi Lamichhane, appeared at the Kathmandu District Court on Sunday to attend a scheduled court date.
On the same day, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak was also presented before the court for remand extension in connection with a separate case.
Lamichhane’s hearing relates to cases involving cooperative fraud (Swarnalakshmi Cooperative), organized crime, and money laundering. According to court information officer Deepak Shrestha, the next hearing has been scheduled for Baisakh 14.
In the Swarnalakshmi Cooperative fraud case, Lamichhane was released after posting bail of NPR 6 million. He is also facing cases in four other courts. In one such case, the Rupandehi District Court had ordered his detention for trial in connection with the Supreme Cooperative fraud case. However, he was later released after settling the required amount. Earlier, he had also posted NPR 10 million bail at the district court.
Similarly, he has been released on bail in other cooperative-related cases:
- NPR 6.5 million in Pokhara’s Suryadarshan Cooperative
- NPR 5.4 million in Chitwan’s Sahara Cooperative
- NPR 10 million in Sano Paila Cooperative
Lamichhane is also facing charges of organized crime and money laundering. A previous interim government had decided to withdraw these charges, but the decision is currently under review at the Supreme Court of Nepal after a writ petition was filed. A hearing on this matter is ongoing as of Sunday.
