Resham Chaudhary, founder of the Garik Unmukti Party (NUPA), has announced that he is no longer associated with the party. He made the declaration through a live video message on Facebook.
Chaudhary established the Nagarik Unmukti Party in Poush 2078 BS, a political formation that emerged following the Tikapur incident. He had formed the party while serving a jail sentence for his conviction in the Tikapur killings, appointing his wife, Ranjita Shrestha, as party president while he assumed the role of patron.
In his message, Chaudhary stated, “From today, I announce my separation from NUPA. I will no longer be part of Unmukti Party. I declare a separate campaign. I trust that friends who understand my sentiments and the essence of my movement will support me.”
He had originally launched the party to morally support the “Janji Youth Movement” and to advance the new political consciousness emerging from it.
NUPA currently has 11 lawmakers, with four at the federal level and representation in Sudurpashchim, Lumbini, and Madhesh provinces.
Political differences between Chaudhary and his wife Ranjita Shrestha surfaced after President Ramchandra Paudel granted them remaining sentence remission. Although he was elected party president in the first general convention of Poush 2080, the Election Commission did not recognize the election.
Later, on 14 Shrawan 2082, he held a national gathering, removed Ranjita from the presidency, and appointed his father Lalbir Chaudhary. However, the Election Commission invalidated this move as Lalbir was not among the 21 founding members and only the sitting president had the authority to convene such a meeting.
