Sasmita Pokharel, the candidate of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, has been elected from Kathmandu Constituency No. 5 in the House of Representatives election.
According to the latest vote count released by the Election Commission Nepal, Pokharel secured 17,205 votes. He previously worked in the secretariat of former Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah.
Pokharel defeated senior Nepali Congress leader and former minister Pradeep Paudel by a wide margin. Paudel received 5,431 votes.
Meanwhile, Ishwar Pokharel of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) came third with 2,756 votes. Kamal Thapa of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party finished fourth with 1,002 votes.
Pokharel managed to secure victory by surpassing candidates from major political parties. However, the official announcement from the Election Commission is yet to be made.
