Mahendra Singh Thakuri, founding district chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in West Nawalparasi, has left the party and joined the Nepali Congress.
He was welcomed into the Nepali Congress by party president Bishwo Prakash Sharma during an election सभा held on Thursday at Bardaghat–12, Chaupata. Thakuri, who had been leading the district committee of the RSP, was reportedly dissatisfied with the party leadership over candidate selection and ticket distribution.
In the 2022 House of Representatives election, Thakuri had secured 12,499 votes as an RSP candidate. His departure on the eve of the election is seen as a major setback for the RSP in West Nawalparasi.
Thakuri had grown unhappy after former Nepali Congress Lumbini Province General Secretary Bikram Khanal joined the RSP and received an election ticket. Earlier, his elder brother Guptasen Thakuri, former vice-chair of Susta Rural Municipality, had also announced his resignation from the RSP.
