The seven-party alliance in Madhes Province continued its sit-in protest for the seventh consecutive day on Monday, demanding the annulment of the recently formed provincial government. Lawmakers from the Nepali Congress, Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal, Janamat Party, CPN (Maoist Centre), Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LOSAPA), CPN (Unified Socialist), and Nagarik Unmukti Party gathered in front of the Madhes Building to press their demands.
The alliance accuses former Province Chief Sumitra Devi Bhandari of misusing Article 168(3) of the Constitution by appointing UML parliamentary party leader Saroj Kumar Yadav as Chief Minister despite lacking a majority. They argue the appointment violates constitutional provisions and parliamentary norms, insisting that the government must be annulled immediately.
A writ petition filed by the alliance against the government formation is also being heard in the Supreme Court today. Alongside this, the impeachment motion registered against Provincial Speaker Ramchandra Mandal has further intensified the protest movement.
Leaders of the seven-party alliance say they will continue to exert pressure through both legal channels and street protests to correct what they call a “constitutional irregularity.” The political tension in Madhes Province remains high as the legitimacy of the newly formed government continues to be fiercely contested
