Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has said that he adopted a moderate approach to save the party from the risk of division. Speaking at an interaction program with senior party workers in Sundarharaicha of Morang Constituency No. 6 on Thursday, he clarified that his main reason for not participating in the special general convention was to prevent a possible split within the party.
Dr. Koirala stated that had he attended the convention, there was a serious risk of the party breaking apart. He claimed that his current unity with Dr. Dila Sangraula and their joint involvement in the election campaign demonstrates internal unity within the party.
Recalling his tenure as a Member of Parliament, he said he had consistently raised his voice against corruption and in favor of good governance, and ensured that the dignity of the people of the constituency was never compromised in national politics.
Expressing confidence that the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21 would provide a clear political direction to the country, Dr. Koirala urged party workers to move past internal disputes related to the general convention and focus on the election. He emphasized that maintaining party unity is the foremost responsibility at present and said he therefore chose a calm and balanced stance.
During discussions with party workers, he acknowledged past shortcomings and stressed that the current goal is to ensure the victory of the Nepali Congress. Reaffirming his commitment to policy-making and improving the living standards of the people, he underlined the need for everyone to unite and play an active role in the election. As the election race has already begun, he called for full mobilization of party strength to build public support in favor of the Nepali Congress.
