The House of Representatives convened a brief and consensus-oriented session today, which concluded in just 27 minutes.
Dolprasad (DP) Aryal of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) was elected unopposed as Speaker, ending the session. Senior member Arjun Narsingh KC initiated the election process, announcing Aryal as the sole candidate and giving time for proposers and supporters to present their views.
RSP Chair Ravi Lamichhane, who moved Aryal’s candidacy, delivered a brief speech, thanking other political parties for not nominating a candidate and emphasizing that there was no need to spend much parliamentary time. Lamichhane expressed confidence in Aryal’s competence and integrity, noting that even though he had ten minutes to speak, he did not use the full time—breaking from the tradition of extended speeches by party MPs.
Another supporter, RSP MP Sunil Lamsal, also spoke concisely, expressing full backing for Aryal and wishing him a successful term.
Other supporters provided slightly more detailed remarks:
Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle highlighted the importance of parliamentary history and neutrality, recalling the standards set by former speakers Krishna Prasad Bhattarai and Daman Nath Dhungana, and emphasized that the new generation should learn from them.
Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam stressed that the Parliament should address issues faced by landless citizens and the general public, expecting the Speaker to facilitate action from the chair. She called for the Parliament to become an institution that produces results, not just a platform for speeches.
The session concluded with senior member KC formally declaring Dolprasad Aryal as the Speaker. The next House meeting has been scheduled for Monday at 1 PM.
