Singer Babul Giri has been taken into police custody after the family of late singer Nitu Paudel filed a complaint accusing him of abetting her suicide.
Police summoned Giri for questioning following the registration of the complaint, and he was taken into custody after appearing voluntarily.
“He was called in after the complaint was filed. He is currently under police control,” said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ramesh Thapa, Chief of Kathmandu District Police Range.
About the incident
Thirty-year-old Paudel had attempted self-immolation by pouring petrol over her body. She died on Friday morning during treatment at Kirtipur Burn Hospital.
Following her death, her brother Ganesh Paudel lodged a complaint against singer Babul Giri, accusing him of encouraging her to take her own life. The District Police Range has already begun investigation based on the complaint.
Last Saturday, Paudel set herself on fire at Yam Tilak Studio located in Anamnagar. She had suffered burns on 60 percent of her body. After she attempted to take her life, police had initially summoned Giri for investigation and released him on the condition that he would appear whenever required.
According to police, Giri had attempted to extinguish the fire after Paudel set herself ablaze. SSP Thapa said that the dispute between Giri and Paudel and the events leading up to the incident will be thoroughly investigated.
Giri, 33, originally from Melamchi Municipality-6 in Sindhupalchok, runs a studio in Anamnagar. Paudel, aged 30, was a resident of Nagarjun in Kathmandu.
Immediately after Paudel’s suicide attempt, police had questioned members of her family, but they were unable to provide details regarding the dispute between the two.
