South Africa defeated Afghanistan in a dramatic match that was decided in a second Super Over at the ICC T20 World Cup.
Chasing a target of 24 runs set by South Africa in the second Super Over, Afghanistan managed to score only 19 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. The match had earlier progressed to a second Super Over after South Africa scored 17 runs for the loss of 1 wicket in reply to Afghanistan’s 18 runs in the first Super Over.
Earlier in the game, Afghanistan were chasing a target of 188 runs. They were bowled out for 187 runs in 19.4 overs, pushing the match into a Super Over. Rahmanullah Gurbaz played a brilliant knock of 84 runs for Afghanistan, while South Africa’s Lungi Ngidi picked up three wickets.
Batting first after losing the toss at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India, South Africa posted 187 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Ryan Rickelton scored 61 runs and Quinton de Kock added 59. For Afghanistan, Azmatullah Omarzai claimed three wickets.
With their second consecutive win, South Africa now have 4 points from two matches in Group ‘D’. Afghanistan, on the other hand, suffered their second straight defeat.
