To address the increasing problem of daily traffic congestion in the Kathmandu Valley, the Traffic Police have enforced a strict new rule. From now on, all long-distance public vehicles—both daytime and night services—must depart only from designated bus parks. They are no longer allowed to stop or pick up passengers randomly along the roadside.
According to Naresh Raj Subedi, spokesperson of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, long-distance buses had recently begun behaving like local buses, stopping anywhere to pick up and drop off passengers. This practice was causing serious traffic jams, especially during peak hours.
He stated, “Traffic congestion in the capital is growing rapidly. Long-distance vehicles stopping illegally to pick up or drop off passengers has further intensified the issue. Therefore, all such vehicles must now depart only from bus parks.”
Subedi also mentioned that the office has requested concerned authorities to review the route permits issued to long-distance vehicles, as the need for an overhaul has become evident.
He emphasized that traffic jams directly affect people’s daily lives, making coordination among all stakeholders essential for a long-term solution. The Traffic Police have already introduced several strict measures to strengthen road discipline.
Drivers who violate red lights, cross lanes incorrectly, overspeed, or drive under the influence of alcohol are now required to attend mandatory awareness classes.
To further improve responsible driving behavior, plans are being made to make these awareness programs even more effective. Additionally, an online awareness class service has been launched.
Those using the service via mobile app must uninstall and reinstall the app once to access the new system, Subedi said. With this upgraded system, users can attend classes from home, making the process more convenient.
The Traffic Police believe that after implementing the new rule, improvements will be seen in unmanaged parking, unnecessary stopping, and overall passenger management across the Valley.
According to the office, it remains committed to strengthening traffic management and ensuring smoother mobility for citizens in the Kathmandu Valley.
