The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear today a writ petition demanding that the government led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli be declared a caretaker government.
Advocate Birendra KC filed the writ on Thursday, arguing that the Prime Minister violated the constitutional provision requiring a vote of confidence after coalition partners withdrew their support. The court has listed the case for hearing today.
The petition names the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers as the respondent. Recently, Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal and Nagarik Unmukti Party had withdrawn their support to the government.
However, the government’s stance is that since these two parties’ signatures were not included in the initial submission to the President during government formation, their withdrawal does not necessitate a vote of confidence.
