The Supreme Court of Nepal has issued a show-cause order to the government demanding an explanation for the arrest of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
The order was issued by the bench of Justice Meghraj Pokharel after Oli’s wife, Radhika Shakya, filed a habeas corpus petition claiming that her husband was being held in unlawful detention.
Questions were raised over actions taken by Oli in his capacity as Prime Minister during the Gen Z protests on Bhadra 23 and 24. A probe commission formed by the government to investigate the incident had recommended an inquiry into Oli, as well as former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak. Acting on this recommendation, authorities arrested both Oli and Lekhak on Saturday morning.
