The Supreme Court has scheduled the hearing on a writ petition regarding Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s confidence vote in a joint bench of Justices Mahesh Sharma Poudel and Nripadhwaj Niraula.
The petition, filed by advocate Birendra KC and others, had earlier been reviewed by a single bench of Justice Sunil Kumar Pokharel, which raised four constitutional questions and ordered the Prime Minister and the Speaker to submit written responses.
The legal status of the Oli government has come into question after the Janata Samajbadi Party and the Nagarik Unmukti Party withdrew their support.
Meanwhile, the Butwal bench of the High Court Tulsipur is set to hear today the bail application of Rastriya Swatantra Party President Rabi Lamichhane, who is currently in custody in connection with the cooperative fraud case.
Lamichhane has demanded his release, claiming that he has already deposited his share of the embezzled amount.
However, the Rupandehi District Court previously rejected his request, citing uncertainty over the exact amount of liability he bears.
In the Supreme Cooperative fraud case, total embezzlement has been estimated at Rs 1.099 billion, out of which Lamichhane has deposited around Rs 275 million as a bank guarantee.
He is currently being held at Nakkhu Prison in Lalitpur.
