The Nepal Teachers’ Federation National Committee has announced the first phase of protests, stating that its concerns were not addressed in the School Education Bill passed on Thursday by the House of Representatives’ Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee.
Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu on Friday, the federation said the government passed the bill without fully implementing the agreements previously reached with teachers.
Although the bill contains several positive provisions, many of the key demands of teachers and staff remain unaddressed, said Federation Chairperson Laxmi Kishore Subedi.
As part of the first phase of protests, Subedi announced that on Bhadra 9 (August 25), memorandums will be submitted to the Prime Minister, Education Minister, and chief whips of political parties. From Bhadra 11 to 20 (August 27–September 5), memorandums will be submitted to the central offices of all political parties, accompanied by two-hour sit-in demonstrations.
Similarly, memorandums will be submitted at all local levels on Bhadra 13 (August 29) and at all district Education Development and Coordination Units on Bhadra 15 (August 31) with representative participation.
Subedi further stated that on Bhadra 21 (September 6), the second phase of protest programs would be announced, which will include stronger and more confrontational demonstrations. He emphasized that the upcoming movement will be tougher and more pressure-driven than before. The federation’s only focus, he added, is on ensuring that the government implements the agreements already reached.
Subedi expressed confidence that their demands would be incorporated through parliamentary discussions before the bill is finally passed.
