The Nepal Transport Entrepreneurs National Federation has demanded that the government immediately adjust public transport fares following a sharp increase in petroleum prices.
The federation issued a statement expressing serious concern a day after the Nepal Oil Corporation increased fuel prices effective from the night of Jestha 2, raising diesel prices by Rs 10 per liter and petrol by Rs 15 per liter.
According to the federation, such a significant increase at once directly affects transport entrepreneurs and the general public.
In the statement, the federation’s General Secretary Doknath Gautam said that public transportation is entirely dependent on fuel, and any fluctuation in fuel prices has a direct impact on the business.
The federation also expressed dissatisfaction, stating that although the Department of Transport Management Nepal adjusts fares through an automatic system, transport fares have not been revised since Falgun 22, 2078.
It urged the government to immediately adjust fares based on the scientific formula established in 2065, which considers 13 indicators related to vehicle operation.
Through the statement, the federation also called on the government to ensure fare adjustment as soon as possible through the Department of Transport Management for federal routes and through relevant ministries in all seven provinces for provincial routes.
Transport entrepreneurs further stated that raising fuel prices alone will not solve the problem, urging the government to control internal leakages within the Nepal Oil Corporation, manage petroleum consumption, and adopt scientific measures to ensure a smooth and reliable supply of petroleum products.
