With the increase in passenger numbers during Dashain, as people return home or travel for other purposes, the Nepal Transport Independent Workers’ Organization has requested all transport workers nationwide to avoid charging fares higher than the official rates and to ensure smooth service for passengers.
The government has opened route permits across the country until Asoj 22, starting from the first day of Dashain, Ghatasthapana.
According to Chairperson Bhimjwala Rai, complaints have often arisen in previous years regarding overcharging and poor service during festivals. To prevent such grievances, he appealed to workers not to collect fares above the official rates.
Chairperson Rai emphasized that as service providers, workers are obligated to follow government policies and regulations when providing transport services. He added that even a minor instance of overcharging—like one rupee more per passenger—can damage the reputation of transport workers nationwide, so it must be avoided.
The Department of Transport Management, under the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, has set official fare rates last year (Poush 22) after consultations with stakeholders. The organization urged all workers to charge fares according to these rates and issue tickets accordingly.
The fares are determined based on Normal, Deluxe, and Super Deluxe categories, and all vehicles and booking counters should display these rates clearly for passengers.
The organization also warned that passengers can file complaints if overcharged, and violators may face legal action under Section 164(Th) of the Vehicle and Transport Management Act, 2049. Workers are urged to remain vigilant and comply with the law.
