U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that if there is no substantial progress toward a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine war in the next two weeks, he will take major action against Russia, including imposing strict sanctions or taxes.
The warning came on Friday, a week after Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15. Speaking to journalists at the White House, Trump said, “I will make a decision soon. This will be very important, whether it is a large-scale sanction, a tax, or both.”
Trump expressed anger over a recent Russian attack on a U.S. factory in Ukraine. “I am not happy about this, nor about anything related to the war,” he said. “I am not pleased with what is happening in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The direction it takes will become clear over the next two weeks.”
He also advocated for a direct meeting between Russian President Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. “I want the two leaders to sit together. If they do not, we need to understand why,” he added.
Trump reiterated that during his tenure, he prevented seven wars and averted three potential conflicts.
