Two people died and five others were injured after strong winds struck Katari in Udayapur on Sunday evening.
The deceased have been identified as Minamaya Tamang of Katari Municipality–8, Thaliyatar, and 64-year-old Birendra Chaudhary of Katari Municipality–5.
According to the Area Police Office Katari, Chaudhary died when a dried sal tree fell due to strong winds accompanied by rain near the Radha Krishna Temple Katari. The tree collapsed onto a snack shop made of tin roofing and wood where he was present.
Five people were injured in the same incident after being trapped under the fallen tree. The injured include four-year-old Binisha Chaudhary, 27-year-old Yuvraj Karki of Ahaledanda (Katari-5), 46-year-old Leela Bahadur Danuwar of Balaha (Katari-5), 46-year-old Prem Chandra Danuwar from the same area, and 16-year-old Asmita Pariyar of Baseri (Katari-12).
All the injured are currently receiving treatment at the Provincial Hospital in Katari.
Police said that four-year-old Binisha Chaudhary was rescued about 40 minutes later with the help of the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force Nepal, and local residents.
In a separate incident, Minamaya Tamang from Katari Municipality–8 was seriously injured after being struck by a broken tree branch blown by strong winds while she was moving goats at home. She was taken to the provincial hospital for treatment but doctors declared her dead at 9:10 PM, police said.
Among the injured, Leela Bahadur Danuwar, who suffered serious head injuries, has been referred to Biratnagar for further treatment, according to the police.
