A two-week ceasefire has reportedly been agreed between the United States and Iran, according to international media reports citing an announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Tensions between the two countries had sharply escalated in recent days, particularly after Iran closed the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. President Trump had repeatedly warned Iran to reopen the strait, which is a key global oil transit route. However, Iran had shown no indication of complying with the demand.
Trump had issued a strong ultimatum, warning that if the Strait of Hormuz was not reopened by Wednesday morning, Iran would face devastating consequences. Despite the deadline not being met, reports indicate that a ceasefire agreement was reached before any further escalation.
Following Trump’s warning, Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, reportedly held overnight discussions with both sides. These diplomatic efforts are said to have contributed to the agreement on the temporary ceasefire.
