The Ujyalo Nepal Party, which withdrew from its unity agreement with the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), will not be participating in the proportional representation (PR) electoral system. The party has not submitted a separate closed list to the Election Commission.
The deadline for submitting PR closed lists expired on Poush 14. At the time, following a unity agreement between RSP and the Ujyalo Nepal Party, the list was submitted under RSP’s name. As the deadline has now passed, the Ujyalo Nepal Party will only be able to field candidates under the direct (first-past-the-post) electoral system.
Party Chairperson Kulman Ghising has already announced that the party will field candidates in all 165 constituencies.
The PR list submitted by RSP had included 14 candidates from the Ujyalo Nepal Party. An Election Commission official said that since the parties have now split, those candidates must either remain with RSP or withdraw. If they personally withdraw their names by Poush 28, RSP will be allowed to replace them. However, the Ujyalo Nepal Party will not have any candidates under the proportional representation system.
Ghising, who was appointed chairperson only today, also faced questions on this issue during a press conference. He said that if reconciliation proves impossible, the party will proceed by contesting only the direct elections.
