The Nepal Communist Party (UML) is holding demonstrations in Kathmandu today demanding the release of its chairman, KP Sharma Oli.
According to UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet, a protest program will be held at 1 PM at Maiti Ghar Mandal. Basnet urged party members on social media to participate actively, stating, “We request all comrades to join the strong protest program at 1 PM at Maiti Ghar Mandal against the vindictive arrest of our chairman KP Sharma Oli by the current Balendra-led government moving in an authoritarian and arbitrary style, and against all forms of alleged anarchic activities by the home minister. See you on the protest front.”
Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak were arrested by police on Saturday for alleged “torture and killing” during the Janajati movement on Bhadra 23.
Following Oli’s arrest, the UML secretariat decided to organize nationwide protests in opposition. Yesterday, the party held demonstrations in Kathmandu and most districts across the country.
Oli, who was arrested from his residence in Gundu, Bhaktapur on Saturday morning, is currently under medical supervision at Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj.
