CPN-UML leader and former Minister for Law Agni Kharel has made it clear that his party will not shy away from elections, while accusing the current government of failing to move in the direction of holding elections and not creating a conducive environment for it.
Speaking at an interaction program titled “Upcoming House of Representatives Election: Challenges and Opportunities” organized by the Nepal Law Society, Kharel said that even the Prime Minister’s reluctance to meet with leaders of key political parties has raised doubts about the government’s intention to conduct elections.
He stated, “The UML will not run away from elections, no matter how they come. But the government’s structure and actions do not inspire confidence that elections will actually take place.”
Kharel emphasized that it is the government’s responsibility to create an election-friendly atmosphere, but current activities have instead worsened the situation.
He added, “A Prime Minister who says he won’t hold talks with political parties does not seem interested in elections. Those same top leaders he refuses to meet were the ones who appointed Sushila Karki as Chief Justice.”
Recalling history, Kharel pointed out that the Khil Raj Regmi-led government had successfully conducted elections with support from all major political parties, setting an example of effective electoral management.
