Amid tight police security, the Nepal Communist Party (UML) marked Constitution Day today.
The event was held at the party office, which had been reduced to ashes during the demonstration on the 24th. Party leaders and cadres appeared somber due to the destruction of the office and their own property.
The program was chaired by UML Vice-Chairperson Ashtalakshmi Shakya, with Senior Vice-Chairperson Ishwar Pokharel delivering the main speech. Attendees’ attention was largely on the ruins of the party office.
All party buildings in Chyasal had been turned into rubble by fire. Although Chairman KP Sharma Oli was not present, his messages were read aloud at the event by Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali and Central Propaganda Department Chief Rajendra Gautam. On Facebook, Oli described the recent protests as conspiratorial incidents, adding that time would clarify everything.
After the program, UML leaders indicated that no immediate Secretariat or Central Committee meetings would be held and no major meetings would take place before Dashain.
