A meeting of the parliamentary party of Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) has begun as the party takes to the streets in protest against the arrest of its chairman KP Sharma Oli.
The meeting is currently underway at the party headquarters in Chyasal. According to the party, the meeting—attended by members of the National Assembly—will select key positions including the parliamentary party leader in the House of Representatives and the chief whip.
Discussions will also focus on the party’s role in Parliament. The Federal Parliament meeting has been called for Thursday at 2 PM, and UML is preparing to elect its parliamentary leader ahead of that session.
Following the electoral defeat of Chairman Oli and General Secretary Shankar Pokharel, Vice Chairman Ram Bahadur Thapa Badal is almost certain to be chosen as the parliamentary party leader in his capacity as a senior leader.
UML had secured 25 seats in the election. The party has already announced that it will oppose Oli’s arrest through both political and legal means.
The meeting is expected to set an agenda to intensify pressure both on the streets and within Parliament.
