Nepal Communist Party (UML) Vice-Chair Ashtalakshmi Shakya has declared that she will no longer participate in any internal party elections. Speaking at the Central Committee meeting held at Bhrikutimandap on Sunday, Shakya said, “I will no longer contest elections. I don’t need votes. But I will continue to work in ways that strengthen the party.”
She emphasized the need to run the party according to its rules and constitution, urging leaders to adopt a broad-minded approach. “Let us make the party policy-oriented; the main thing is the law,” she stated.
Shakya also recalled a past conversation with Chairman KP Sharma Oli. “I had told the chairman that I would stop working after turning 70, and he said we could take leave together,” she mentioned.
She stressed that leaders should free themselves from the mindset that the party cannot function without them. Furthermore, she advised against pursuing constitutional amendments solely based on public opinion or popular demand.
