The United States has carried out attacks in various parts of Venezuela, including the capital Caracas. According to the BBC, explosions were reported in multiple locations shortly after US President Donald Trump ordered military action against Venezuela.
Following the start of the attacks, President Nicolás Maduro declared a national state of emergency. The Venezuelan government has stated that it will not accept what it called US aggression. After strikes targeting military zones, airspace-related facilities, and major army bases, many surrounding communities were left without electricity. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising over the city.
In recent weeks, the United States had attacked several boats in the Caribbean, accusing them of carrying illegal drugs. Washington has alleged that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was elected illegally and has personally been involved in nationwide drug trafficking.
The Venezuelan government has said that US actions, including the seizure of oil tankers, are attempts to force President Maduro out of power and take control of Venezuela’s oil reserves. US military forces, including warships, had been deployed in the southern Caribbean Sea for months prior to the attacks.
