Venezuela’s acting president Delcy Rodríguez has rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that the United States needs “full access” to Venezuela, asserting that the country is not governed by any foreign power.
Speaking at a government program related to agriculture, food, fisheries, community, and industrial sectors on Tuesday (local time), Rodríguez said, “We are governing alongside the people. The government of Venezuela runs the country—no one else does. There are no external agents governing Venezuela.” Her remarks were broadcast on the state-run Venezolana de Televisión.
Rodríguez also referred to ongoing protests demanding the release of ousted President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. According to her, Venezuelans have taken to the streets to express their views following a US military operation in Caracas on the morning of January 3, after which Maduro and his wife were taken into US custody.
However, opposition groups continue to raise serious questions over Rodríguez’s legitimacy as acting president.
