Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav has highlighted the need for greater awareness and research to tackle the growing challenge of sleep disorders.
Speaking at the second international conference of the Nepalese Society of Sleep Disorders held in Kathmandu today, he said that sleep-related problems are increasing due to busy lifestyles, unhealthy eating habits, and the rising use of technology. He emphasized the importance of addressing these challenges in a timely manner.
Vice President Yadav urged people to stay alert to the impacts of mental stress, unemployment, economic insecurity, and diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, all of which significantly affect sleep. “Modern lifestyle, urbanization, and excessive use of mobile phones and social media have made sleep disorders more serious,” he said. “This is having a negative impact on human health.”
He stressed the need for awareness programs from schools to communities to highlight the importance of proper sleep and called on concerned authorities to take initiatives to solve sleep-related problems. He also underscored the need to increase the number of specialist doctors and health workers, prioritize sleep disorder diagnosis and treatment in health policies, promote Nepal-based research, and strengthen international cooperation.
“Sleep disorders can directly affect not only individuals but also social and economic development,” Vice President Yadav stated. “Their impact can be reduced by maintaining a regular and healthy lifestyle, practicing meditation and yoga, engaging in physical exercise, and consulting specialists.”
With the participation of national and international experts, researchers, doctors, and policymakers, the conference is expected to generate new ideas, research opportunities, and avenues for collaboration, he added.
